Fort Detrick is a red herring, just because there was a safety violation does not mean SARS-CoV-2 came from there. All evidence points to the first cases occuring in China, and multiple different Chinese research groups have noted the similarity between the spike protein receptors in SARS-CoV-2 and a pangolin coronavirus (in fact, one group even used the pangolin virus to screen for candidate drugs to treat the new coronavirus: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/32149769). Pangolins are illegally smuggled into China because their scales are used as a TCM remedy.
