Ehtnic Chinese are admired.  All the media and entertainment in Thailand strive to have Chinese looking faces to lend a sense of legitimacy.  The ethnic Chinese in Thailand own pretty much 90% of the economy.  They are the drivers of all South East Asian economies.  There are uncouth behaviours from Chinese from China which led to many to dislike these people.  Sort of like the "Ugly American" syndrome during the 50s - 80s after the US became affluent and all the newly rich vacation in Europe.  Even the Chinese government are aware of these travellers.
