it was shoot to a 68000 km GTO, and will transfer to the GSO at later date. Translating the main points of a Chinese article on SJ-20:

The Shijian-20 is an advanced communication satellite weighing over 8 tons. It's the China's heaviest satellite, as well as the world's heaviest communication satellite. It is based on the new and experimental DFH-5 platform. The purpose of SJ-20 is to verify the DFH-5 platform as well as the new communication technology carried onboard.

DFH-5 is a new generation of GSO satellite platform. It employ an innovative new structure that enable heavier payload, adaptable for various kind of mission requirements from communication, remote sensing, space experiment, scientific experiment, orbital service etc. A number of experiment were submitted to be carried by SJ-20, after reviewing, the Q/V channel high capacity communication, laser communication, ultra low temperature loopback experiment etc were selected.

SJ-20 is constructed with new shape memory composite material. The performance of the material need to be verified in space.

SJ-20 will conduct the first 5.5 GHz Q/V channel space to earth communication. A laser communication experiment that perform direct destination detection, with higher sensitivity, efficiency, interference resistance, reaching up to 10 Gbps.

The new DFH-5 platform allow payload take off mass to reach 8 to 9 tons, carrying 1.5 to 1.8 ton of effective payload, support it with service life reaching 16 years in space. To achieve this, the DFH-5 structure need to possess larger, taller, stronger characteristic.

The DFH-5 platform will meet the need of various applications, domestic and foreign. It is 100% indigenous technology that will be more competitive in the global market.

Since the first export of communication satellite to Nigeria in May 2007, China has exported 10 commercial communication satellites. These satellites were based on the DFH-4 and DFH-3 platforms.

With the launch of SJ-20 and verification of DFH-5 platform, China will be able to offer heavy broadband communication satellite to the market, and become more competitive globally.

It is projected that by 2022, high capacity communication satellite will provide up to 50% of the world's satellite bandwidth. China will develop several 100G - 1T capacity satellites to meet the need of belt and road countries.
