IMO, a bad mistake they made was not to import the russ 5.45x39mm AK74 and the manufacture licence. The 5.45 mm are said to be cheaper to make than NATO 5.56 mm I read. They likely wanted to look 'pro-western' with the NATO 5.56 mm.
