See, decades ago,the PLA was poorly equipped and bayonet and close combat training were emphasied. I chipped off some pics from Motif's & found something interesting:Half of the PLA boys and girls have long necks !! Mind u long necks are bad for close combat  and could be broken more easily !!

While I don't think those PLA parade soldiers were picked for their neck nor I think the PLA is a prep-school for modelling or dancing; things have changed:The PLA now is more interested in drone warfare than bayonet charge.

(BTW, someone should post what I said above at some other forums to prove chinese can't fight)
