Seeing your parents deferring to others, acting like coolies can have severe impact on a growing child. 

I cringe everyime I see Chinese waiters, many older than me crawling on all fours to please white people.  Where is your pride, man? You want respect, act like a man. Deal with all the consequences than come with it, good or bad. 

Also, these parents are strict and demaning in hope of making their children study hard to escape the predicament they are in actually has the opposite effect.
