But in the end, the US decided not to attempt to assimilate a large population of brown-faced Catholics, who would become voting citizens: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_of_Mexico_Movement This is the same reason the United States allowed the Philippines to become independent - otherwise the Filipinos would be made citizens and given the vote, and that would be dreadfully unacceptable because America would be swamped by brown-faced Catholics who would have political influence. These days fewer and fewer Mexicans emigrate to the US because the economy there is getting better (in fact there are more Mexicans leaving the US than entering), but the same isn't true for Central America (hence the caravans).
