There were some things in that economist.com article that should be elaborated on to give a better picture of the direction China is going with this. Articles to that will be posted below. The important question is this. Suppose China is only half self-sufficient in the chip industry. Then like who cares, no one on the outside would care. China could see industry and companies cut off and no one would care, such as the ZTE ban for example, which was personally reversed by President Trump.
At what point, where China approaches self-sufficiency in the semi-conductor industry, that foreign firms rush in? They have to make that move at that moment because if they don't, then they cut off from the China market, which is huge. Are we there already or close?
