That was very curious. Just my opinion ... I reading it ... He was bringing up interesting points ... suggests some possibilities ... what may happen with the competing views ...
At that point, 3/4 thru the first article, the thought occurred about Rumsfeld famous "unknown unknowns" ... then in his second article he actually uses that term.
Well, the point is, you cannot do much about the unknown unknown.
When Rumsfeld said it, it was about the terrorist and how or if they can do another sneak attack.
In this context of world history and potential geo-political rivalry, the unknown unknown may not be necessarily all negative.
Does a single one of China's neighbours want to confront China? That is a no, that is a known known.
What is the unknown unknown is how the world will be like when the western world losses it omnipotence via decline or withdrawal or both.
That kind of uncertainty of the unknown unknown, gets these public intellectuals all worked up.
