AECC completes the first CJ-1000AX engine

The Chinese manufacturer AECC Commercial Aircraft Engine has completed an assembly process of 18 months for the first demonstration engine CJ-1000AX

The Commercial Aircraft Engine Company Limited ( AECC ) has developed an alternative engine for the new COMAC C919 passenger plane, according to a government ministry on December 29, 2017. The new engine CJ-1000AX will be used to help validate advanced technologies, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) of China. China plans to build another 24 prototype engines to support an airworthiness certification campaign, with commissioning after 2021.

The new engine CJ-1000AX reveals new dimensions. It will have a diameter of 1.95m (76.8in) and a length of 3.29m (10.7ft), according to the statement. That compares with the 1.98m in diameter and 3.32m in length of the Leap-1C. The shorter length of the CJ-1000AX is probably explained by a design that, compared to the Leap-1C, uses a lower stage of rotating blades in the low pressure turbine. In many other aspects, the Chinese manufacturer AECC Commercial Aircraft Engine and CFM use a similar configuration, with a design of two coils, which includes a one-stage fan, a three-stage amplifier and a 10-stage high-pressure compressor. and two-stage high pressure turbine. The CJ-1000AX uses six stages in the low pressure turbine, compared to seven in the Leap-1C.

But engine designs also reveal sharp differences in the use of advanced technologies. AECC has not selected a fan drive gear system for the CJ-1000AX, but it does use Rolls-Royce style hollow titanium wide rope fan blades, according to the MIIT release. In contrast, CFM uses an equal number of 18 blades, but they are made of carbon fiber.

The launch of MIIT also reveals that AECC is printing in 3D the fuel nozzles for the single-ring combustor of the CJ-1000AX. In 2012, a Texas-based consultancy called Lucintel published a turbofan market forecast that shows China's plans to develop three versions of the CJ-1000. A CJ-1000AX demonstrator of approximately 12,800 kgf of thrust would come first, followed by an "A" push version of 12,800 kgf for production and finally a "B" model of approximately 13,400 kgf of thrust for long-range aircraft.
