Were those pro-independence protests not violent? If there were massive university protests in the US, advocating independence for CA/TX/PR or perhaps for certain racial groups, you can bet they would either be shut down quickly or at least be demonised in the mainstream press. American universities can only toe a certain political line, it is hypocritical of them to ask otherwise of Hong Kong.
