Was this article written by Chinese state media? Oh, it's an Anglo-American media - never mind, little difference when it comes to anti-India propaganda.
.
China's expansionist tactic has long been to first claim an area, then get the other side to agree that it is disputed, then create 'facts on the ground' to justify China's ownership.
.
Doklam is disputed territory. China is trying to change the status quo there by creating 'facts on the ground', i.e. infrastructure, just like it has done in the South China Sea.
.
While India is not party to the dispute, it is treaty-bound to aid Bhutan on any transgressions on it's claims. The road-building by China was such a transgression. This is little different from the USA being treaty-bound to aid Japan, except the power disparity between Bhutan and China is massively greater than between Japan and China.
.
Bhutan did request Indian's help. It was in fact, a Royal Bhutanese Army unit which first tried to stop the PLA, but to no avail. India reached out to China diplomatically and repeatedly requested that the road-building in disputed territory be stopped, but China flat-out refused.
.
At this point, an Indian Army unit moved in to stop the illegal construction by China in disputed land.
.
Shortly after, Chinese media (all organs of the state) started beating the drums of war, with daily threats, insults, diatribe and abuse heaped on Indians and their leaders. Indian media (which is all private) has been extremely circumspect and muted.
.
As far as the West and it's publications (TE, NYT, WP, etc) are concerned, an overwhelming majority of Indians don't give a flying f**k about what you think or say. India stands up for itself on its own. If you "western culture" jokers tried to build a road through a treaty ally of India, India won't allow that uncontested as well.
.
Lastly, TE, keep crying about the BJP and Modi. Your stooges in India are going to keep losing.]

.

'The single biggest reason for this change of opinion was 1962. Indians who spent their formative years during in the early 1960s were in positions of influence by the 1990s. Hardly a surprise then that they harboured deep suspicion of Beijing.'
.
 .

And what EXACTLY was "1962"???:

.

'It wasn't China, but Nehru who declared 1962 war'

.

'As General Niranjan Prasad, commander of 4 Division, wrote later: "We at the front knew that since Nehru had said he was going to attack, the Chinese were certainly not going to wait to be attacked" — and of course they didn't. That's how the war began.'

'Swamy’s views about the 1962 war, a sensitive issue for Indians, who hold China responsible for the war, may seem sacrilegious but are known to be shared by many in the party – secretly. “The border clash was avoidable but [the then prime minister Jawaharlal] Nehru had received encouragement from the US to take advantage of China’s misery from the drought and famine,” said Swamy.'

There is this Chinese saying: 精人出口 笨人出手 (The cunning manipulates. The foolish acts according to the cunning's manipulations.) There were/are a matching pair of cunning and foolish people.

Regarding this new "spat", China gave India "two weeks’ warning" in "good faith" so that India could object if it wanted to-- in order to avoid precisely this kind of "spat". Apparently, someone in India saw it as a commie sent opportunity to set a trap for China. Instead of returning China's goodwill, and thereby allowing the China-India relationship to progress, India did the opposite-- it did not object but crossed an Un-disputed border when the rebuilding of the road got started-- and hope to stare China down:

.

'One report, citing a single anonymous source within the Chinese embassy in New Delhi, notes that the Chinese informed the Indians on June 1 that they would begin construction of a road in the area in June, with two weeks’ warning. That has not yet been reported anywhere, but would certainly highlight that India’s decision to act across the border was based on credible information of China’s intentions; it would also explain China’s extremely negative reaction in light of what Beijing might see as a good faith effort at notifying New Delhi before taking action. '

.

.

Like Nehru, Modi is hoping China would swallow India's arrogance that surpasses that of the world's Sole Superpower:

.

'Second, it is militarily intervening on behalf of a friendly partner country to uphold the latter’s claims of sovereignty to a patch of territory which the partner country does not effectively control. Not even the mighty US military extends defence obligations to disputed territories that its allies do not exercise effective control over – let alone intervene on their behalf. '

.

'For Beijing, the “win” state now is less about having a road that terminates at Jampheri ridge and more about seeing the Indians blink first. '

.

.

'Some people in Delhi must have taken their eyes off the ball' (at about 16.50)

.

.

It looks like this is Modi's "Forward Policy":
