Cops help Chinese woman take trip to Bodh Gaya

TNN | Jan 19, 2016, 12.01 AM IST

NEW DELHI: A 25-year-old Chinese national lost her way in the city on Friday night and was nearly cheated by a group of locals before a night patrolling police team in south Delhi managed to rescue her. The woman, identified as Ying Li, is a native of Chang Sha city in Hunan province. She had landed at IGI airport on Friday night to take a pilgrimage to Bodh Gaya.

Senior officials said the patrol team, led by inspector Suresh Chander, SHO, Fatehpur Beri, spotted a few local residents surrounding the woman around 1.30am. "The foreign national could barely communicate in any language other than Mandarin. The locals were trying to extract money from her to arrange for her journey. The cops on patrol brought her to Fatehpur Beri police station and she was questioned. She showed flight tickets, passport and other documents proving her to be a Chinese national," said a senior police official.

The police team then went around the city at 3am looking for a translator as she could not communicate her destination. It was found that she wanted to go to Bodh Gaya but had no money. Later, she was taken to the Chinese Embassy who asked the cops and the woman to return on Monday.

Police said that the woman was cash-strapped and owned only Chinese credit or debit cards. Cops roamed around the city for nearly eight hours to find an ATM which accepted her cards, but to no avail. "The next morning, she was taken to a private bank which is in partnership with a Chinese one. She was able to withdraw some cash, but it was not enough to get her into a hotel. The police then approached an NGO and arranged for her stay for Saturday and Sunday and also arranged for an air ticket to Bodh Gaya for Monday," the official said.

While leaving, the woman left a letter thanking the police team for their help.
