Russia Plans To Make An Entire City Vanish For A Military Exercise

Posted By Jacob Bojesson On 9:35 PM 08/10/2016 In | No Comments

Russia will cover an entire city behind a smoke screen this week as part of a military exercise.

The city of Severomorsk — home to about 50,000 people along Russia’s northern arctic coast — is the venue for the unprecedented experiment. The idea is to create a “blanket of smoke” that makes the city and the naval base disappear from radars.

The Russian military released a statement to ensure the people of Severomorsk that the smoke is harmless in the concentrations that will be used, but that they can expect it to smell a little. The citizens didn’t seem too bothered with the exercise, as the military frequently uses Severomorsk for experiments.

“Let them cover the whole city with smoke,” Mila Tsigareva, a local hardware store worker, told ABC News. “It’s all for our own good.”

The smoke screen will be up for three days. The city has been a “closed city” for the past 20 years, meaning people need a special permission to enter and leave its boundaries.
