Trump has been a longstanding supporter of gay issues and even had the rich gay Reoublican Peter Thiel speak at the convention. During the 1980's, when Trump was younger and America was still great, even most Democratic politicians acted as if homosexuality was almost on a par with pedophilia. It's true Reagan might have been on friendly terms with many gays from his Hollywood days, but almost no Republicans (or Democrats for that matter) would have expressed public support for gay marriage.
