nothing happened, who would gamble on Washington's willingness to defend them?  The new Pinoy's president knew he never had an assurance from White House under Obama's adminstration.  There's no straight answer for him only ambiguity regarding South China Sea. It would be better off for him to negotiate with China and get something out of it.
