Actually the 5.56x45 round isn't very lethal at any range.

At close range it's even less lethal because it will simply zip through a body without stopping and create a tiny wound channel. At further ranges it has a greater chance of stopping inside the body and also to be tumbling prior to impacting a body (due to passing below transonic speeds), which will cause more traumatic wounds. If the world's militaries were allowed to use hollow points ('prohibited' by the Hague Convention), then it would be a different story, but even then a 7.62 hollow point is going to be much more lethal than a 5.56 hollow point. The only tradeoff is increased recoil and decreased number of rounds carried.

I used personally use 5.56 hollow points in my semi-auto rifles for home defense which I feel is good enough, but I also own some 7.62x51 rifles for when I really want to go boom. The largest caliber I own is the .338 Lapua Magnum, a truly monstrous round for when I feel masochistic and want to injury my shoulder on purpose for fun.
