Some of the plans I've seen actually involve three different engine types in one aircraft for subsonic, supersonic, and hypersonic speeds since we can't yet make a single engine that can cover all three speeds (though look up the Sabre engine for an interesting development). Regardless of the configuration, a bomber will need to be able to go from 0 to mach 5+ on its own so on a return flight it would be able to utilize its non-hypersonic flight mechanisms to make it back.
