I don't see how its self-defense capability limits its hangar space. The large P-700 missile rack forward of the hangar is offensive weaponry, which designed out of the 001A would definitely increase hangar space. But other than that the Tor VL launchers are housed in the outboard sponsons so they do not impact hangar space.

What I would like to see but probably won't is the 001A and future PLAN carriers loading 2 CCL VLS, 1 each at the rear port and starboard sponson positions. These modules would allow for a combination of quad-packed DK-10's and ASW missiles (e.g. 32x DK-10's and 8x CY-5's), which would form another layer of defense past the CIWS and also past the HHQ-10's.
