Personally I dont take an emotional attitude towards islam. When muslims formed a major civilisation and was powerful, it could afford to be more tolerant(more than christians back then), Saladin's personal physician Maimonides was actually an important rabbi in jewish history. When muslims are weak, they become fanatical and grab watever straws they got.
