Surveillance cameras with a depth of view extending over 20 kilometers into Chinese territory have been equipped by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police a month after the People's Liberation Army entered the disputed regions of Demchok and Chumar in Ladakh, reports the New Delhi-based Times of India.

The Indian government is also in process of acquiring vehicles and choppers for the Indo-Tibetan Border Police. "China has become more aggressive," said Subhash Goswami, director general of the unit. "Protests against Indian road construction have become more vociferous. Perhaps it is reacting to India aggressively improving infrastructure along the border."

Goswami said that his unit is ready to face any challenge from China. Since he can not deploy his troops instantly to every area along the border, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police has installed a state-of-the-art surveillance camera system at the Thakung post, located north of Chushui. Long-range surveillance and thermal imaging allows the camera to see far into the distance in many conditions, even at night, according to a source.

Footage from the camera recorded over a period of 10 days can be used to analyze Chinese troop movement and infrastructure plans. At least 50 border outposts in Ladakh could be equipped with such cameras, Goswami said. When the Indian government completes the project to deploy optical fibres along the border, cameras can be connected to BoPs and eventually with headquarters in Delhi for real time monitoring.
