Ben Carson doesn’t want a Muslim to be president, and neither do a bunch of Republicans.
Seventy-two percent of Republican voters in North Carolina believe a person of the Islamic faith should not be allowed to launch a White House campaign. Just 16 percent said they’d be OK with it, according to a poll by a Raleigh-based firm that surveyed 576 Republican primary voters.
The same percentage of respondents who’d prefer a president of another religion—72 percent—agreed that President Obama is “waging a war on Christianity,” with just one in five Republicans believing that such a claim is nonsense.
The poll, conducted by Public Policy Polling from September 24-27, also revealed that many of Carson’s supporters in the Tar Heel state were probably not upset when he said earlier this month he would not advocate a Muslim becoming president. Forty-four percent of them said Islam should be illegal in the United States. Only 38 percent said it should remain legal.
Donald Trump’s recent failure to correct a supporter’s false claim that President Obama is Muslim is also unlikely to impact his support in North Carolina, at least among those who already back him: Fifty two percent of those who support the Donald think Islam should be illegal, with less than a third believing it should be permitted.
