TOKYO: Japan's automobile production plunged a record 41 percent year-on-year in January as exports tumbled by more than half, the Japan Automobile Manufacturers' Association (JAMA) said on Friday.
"This is the sharpest decline since 1967, when we started compiling this kind of data," an association spokesman said.
The association said 576,539 vehicles, including trucks and buses, were produced in January 2009 compared with 976,975 for the same month of 2008, a decrease of 400,436 units or 41.0 percent.
Exports of passenger cars, trucks and buses tumbled 59.1 percent in January.
Shipments to the United States, the main export market for Japanese carmakers, nosedived by 76.5 percent with those to Europe plunging by 63.2 percent and by 54.8 percent for the rest of Asia, said
