By economic muscle, I mean the investment and trades that China have in Laos today. The US is influential in the past because of trades and investment, not anymore in many parts of the world. So what the US has military relationship with those three? China has military relationship with nations in the US backyard too. In fact, there is a vacuum in US traditional ally, Indonesia, coz of US military embargo on that nation. I heard China has stepped in too, just need to handle those old school in the military that still remember good old times when the indonesians are close to americans.
