Some work like sun screen lotion and some whiteners are even pills. I'm not sure how the latter work. One can find within the same family people with light or darker skin, no big deal.
However, cheap whitening lotion could contain mercury I read. Not sure about the budget of the hindi consumer.I forget to mention one thing: the main reason the hindis want lighter skin I heard has something to do with caste. Hi caste hindis have lighter skin and some low caste hindis might want to be passed as hi caste.
