Being members of the Commonwealth (of which the US is not) are far from being constitutents of an 'empire', where near complete economic, political and industrial hegemony in additional consistent legal and social institutions would be established over parts of the empire. Also, a specific hierarchy is established between the political centre and its satellite states. None of these exist in the present Commonwealth.
And what 'current trend' are we talking about? let's see some evidence and data instead of very vague generalisations.
