I think the nutrient deficiencies you get from eating nothing but unprocessed corn turned off a lot of Europeans, although Japanese seem partial to corn on the cob. I'm not surprised that the Germans considered corn only fit for fodder, given its status as food for the impoverished in the Old World. In Europe and China (and also America), the idea of eating WHOLE WHEAT BREAD by anyone except starving peasants would have been considered shocking until quite recently. Anyone who could afford it at white bread.
