Thomas Hastings was one of the individuals who testified before the Joint Special Committee on Chinese Immigration in 1875. Hastings was a former California state senator and a member of the California State Board of Agriculture.
During the hearing, Hastings expressed his views on the impact of Chinese immigration on the labor market in California. He argued that Chinese workers were taking jobs away from white laborers and that this was causing economic hardship for the white working class. Hastings also claimed that the Chinese were not assimilating into American society and were a threat to the cultural and social fabric of the country.
Hastings's testimony was consistent with the views of many white Californians at the time, who were concerned about the increasing number of Chinese immigrants in the state and their perceived negative impact on the economy and society. The hearing ultimately resulted in the passage of the Page Act of 1875, which restricted the immigration of Chinese women for the purpose of prostitution or forced labor.
