事情一出，弗吉尼亚大学率先回复，否认和狄邦教育有特殊关系。弗吉尼亚大学发言人承认曾接受过狄邦教育的飞机票和旅行补助，而且表示他们向来关心中国学生的申请资料正确性，且并不会对使用留学中介的学生有任何偏爱。

The University of Virginia accepted plane tickets for one trip from a Chinese education company accused of admissions fraud, according to a report from the Reuters news agency.

According to the story, posted Friday afternoon, UVa is one of several universities that accepted airline tickets from Dipont — an education company that the Reuters report accuses of massive college application fraud — in 2014.

Anthony de Bruyn, a spokesman for the university, said a UVa admissions officer attended a conference sponsored by Dipont in 2014.

“The company paid for the employee’s airfare, which is permitted under University policy,” de Bruyn said in an email.

But, de Bruyn said, UVa does not have a “special relationship” that the report says Dipont claims.

Vanderbilt University, Wellesley College, Syracuse University, Tulane University and the University of Southern California are among the colleges also implicated in the report, which claims admissions officers from each of those schools have visited China to “personally advise” students at an annual program on how to apply to U.S. colleges.

“Many U.S. universities and colleges, including UVa, have been concerned about the viability of Chinese college admissions companies and agents representing Chinese applicants, and the university does not offer preferential treatment to applicants using such services,” de Bruyn said.

Dipont is an education company that helps Chinese students gain admission to American colleges and universities. The report cites anonymous sources within Dipont that claim the company routinely wrote application essays, altered recommendations and — in at least one case — gave a student access to his high school transcript so he could erase bad grades.

The news comes as UVa undergoes a major expansion into China. Last March, the university opened its China office in Shanghai — the university’s first overseas office. President Teresa A. Sullivan visited Shanghai as part of an extended trip to Asia from May 24 to June 2.
